5 Questions to Ask Before You Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan

Medicare Advantage plans can look very similar on the surface — similar premiums, similar marketing, similar-sounding benefits. The differences that actually matter tend to be in the details. Before enrolling in any plan, these five questions are worth asking.

1. Are my doctors and hospitals in the plan's network?

This is the single most important question for most people. Switching plans can mean switching doctors if your current providers aren't in-network. Check this before anything else — including your specialists, not just your primary care doctor.

2. Are my medications covered, and at what cost?

Look up your actual medications on the plan's formulary, not just whether the plan "includes drug coverage." Two plans can both cover a given drug, but at very different cost tiers.

3. What's the plan's out-of-pocket maximum?

Every Medicare Advantage plan has an annual limit on what you'll pay out of pocket for covered services. This number varies significantly between plans and matters a lot if you have a health event that requires significant care during the year.

4. Does the plan require referrals or prior authorization?

Some plans require a referral to see a specialist, or prior authorization before certain services or procedures. If you see specialists regularly, this extra step can affect how quickly you're able to get care.

5. What extra benefits actually apply to me?

Dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits are common selling points, but the details vary — annual dollar limits, which providers are covered, and whether you need a referral to use them. It's worth understanding the specifics rather than assuming "included" means unlimited.

Putting it together

None of these questions have a universally right answer — they depend on your health, your providers, and your budget. But going through them before you enroll, rather than after, is the difference between a plan that works well for you and one that creates surprises down the road.
